Lovely persimmons from Togane

I was very pleased to receive a big box full of persimmons yesterday. Thanks to Mr. Takamiya, my students, peers and I are going to be eating excellent fruit with lots of vitamin C for a while. Thank you, Takamiya-san!

Setsuko's Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration

JIU held a wonderful event on October 31: Setsuko's Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration. Author Shirley Higuchi and incarceree Sam Mihara participated in the Q & A Session and answered about 20 questions from the audience. If you are interested in some of the comments, please check my Facebook page.

Guaraná at JIU on Halloween

The JIU Festival was canceled, but we were able to have some guaraná together on Saturday, October 31.

JIU Festival 2020

Unfortunately the JIU Festival this year was canceled because of the situation regarding the corona virus. According to the academic schedule, November 2 was going to be the clean-up day and therefore all classes were canceled. I am here today and the campus is very quiet. Fortunately some students showed up and my office looks very lively now.

What you don't have and don't want to have in Brazil: earthquakes

Last week the alarm went off at 4:46 AM and scared us all! There was a long earthquake a few seconds after the alarm, but what scared us more was the loud noise of the alarm. It was impossible to fall asleep after that. When I got to my office, I found out my airplane was broken.

Students are still not allowed on campus and therefore it's very quiet here. The Rose Garden looks amazing now.

Sakura in full bloom

The new Director of the Center for Language Education

As of April 1, Tim Woolstencroft is the new director of the Center for Language Education at JIU. I served as the director for 15 years (!!!) and now will be working with the international students as the Director of the Center for International Students. I will remain the Associate Director for the Center for International Education as well. Despite the Coronavirus chaos, we have been busy here on campus. The members of the Center surprised me with this beautiful Sakura Bonsai and a great bottle of wine on the 31st.
